THE HYENA
At Terra Salvaje, we create unique experiences. Our workshops combine artistic expression, natural reconnection, and liberation from predefined roles. Like hyenas—a misunderstood matriarchal society—we find power in what others misinterpret.
This animal represents the spirit of Terra Salvaje for several reasons:
Intentional subversion : The hyena has always been misunderstood as a scavenger and opportunist animal,
But nothing could be further from the truth. This is an extremely intelligent animal that refuses to be domesticated by any human.
Unconventional femininity : Female hyenas have elevated testosterone levels and external genitalia that appear masculine. They are physically dominant and challenge binary notions of gender—a powerful symbol for questioning predetermined roles for large mammals.
Non-idealized matriarchal society : Unlike bees or ants ("perfect" matriarchies), hyenas represent a complex and effective matriarchy. It is not a romanticized utopia but a functioning system of female power.
Laughter as liberation : The hyena's characteristic "laughter" can be interpreted as a mockery of convention, a refusal to take imposed limitations seriously, and a liberating form of expression.
Resisting caricature : They have survived centuries of cultural demonization by maintaining healthy populations and resisting stereotypes.
Well, there is also an emotional part to this logo, and that is that our beloved dog, Casimiro, looks like the son of a hyena :)
OUR DREAM
This is not a one-person project; it's the work of two people who have worked together to make a dream come true: a project that seeks connection with nature, respect for Mother Earth, and the breaking of stereotypes.
But we've been very fortunate to have the unconditional support of our mothers, sisters, brothers, and friends . It's a pack, a network of emotional and physical support always there to help and comfort in times of need. But we want to grow this network so more women feel understood, valued, and strong, because limits have been imposed, and those boundaries of thought must be eliminated.
We'd like our dream to be part of yours so we can continue building this space, a home for those who want to prove to themselves that they're much stronger than they thought.
